Planning Tools

This page displays your Planning Tools. If you do not meet the eligibility requirements to use any of these Planning Tools, you may see a message to that effect instead.

Benefit Estimate

Generally, if you are a vested in-service member who is at least 55 or a Tier I member who is at least 50 and has at least 30 years of service, you may use this feature to obtain an estimate of retirement benefits under the Qualified Pension Plan (QPP) and Tax-Deferred Annuity (TDA) Program. These estimates are updated on a monthly basis.

Retirement Allowance Calculator

Generally, if you are a non-retired Tier III, IV, or VI member, you may obtain a projection of your QPP retirement benefits. TRS must have valid date-of-birth documentation on file in order for an eligible member to access this calculator. If you have received an Annual Benefits Statement (ABS), some fields of the calculator may be pre-populated with the latest information TRS has on file.

Retirement Date: Your benefit estimate will be calculated based on this date as your retirement date.

Age at Retirement: The age you would be at the projected retirement date. Your age may be rounded up to the next whole number.

Total Service Credit: Any Total Service Credit shown represents the latest information TRS has on file. You may enter the Total Service Credit you expect to earn by your projected retirement date. Total Service Credit includes TRS membership service, transferred service, credited prior service, and any service credit eligible for purchase that you may have as of the current date.

Final Average Salary (FAS): Any FAS shown is equivalent to the estimated compensation base from your most recent Annual Benefits Statement (ABS). For more information on how this figure was calculated, please review your ABS. Your actual FAS at retirement may differ. For the purpose of this estimate, you may enter the FAS you expect to earn by your projected retirement date. The FAS is generally defined as the highest average of wages earned by a member during any continuous period of employment for which the member was credited with three years of service—subject to certain exclusions. Wages earned during any year used in a FAS calculation cannot exceed the average of the previous two years' wages by more than 10%.

Beneficiary's Date of Birth: If you would like to calculate your retirement allowance benefit based on payments to a beneficiary, enter a beneficiary's date of birth. You do not need to use a current beneficiary. You are NOT officially nominating a beneficiary.

Service Purchase Calculator

Generally, if you are a non-retired Tier III or IV member, you may use this feature to obtain estimates of the cost to purchase your eligible prior service credit with a single lump-sum payment by check or through various payment plans of payroll deductions. (Prior service is service that you performed with a New York City and/or a New York State public employer before joining TRS and that was not transferred to TRS.)

Even if otherwise eligible, you may not be able to use the calculator for one of the following reasons:

  • According to our records, you do not have any verified prior service credit eligible for purchase.
  • You are currently purchasing your eligible prior service credit through a payment plan.
  • You have recently requested a Cost Letter.
  • TRS is revising your current payment plan after receiving additional information.

Start and End Dates: You may enter the start and end dates of the prior service by clicking the calendar to select a date, or type in the date directly in MM/DD/YYYY format.

Salary Earned: Enter the salary you earned for the period of prior service you entered. Do not enter a dollar sign, comma, or decimal point. Do not enter an annual salary unless the period of prior service above equals one year.

Payment Option: Select a payment option: lump-sum payment by check, biweekly payroll deductions, or semimonthly payroll deductions. (If you are paid biweekly, you receive 26 paychecks each year; if you are paid semimonthly, you receive 24 paychecks each year.)

Contribution Rate: The contribution rate used in this calculation is based on the most recent QPP contribution rate on record for you. In general, your contribution rate depends on your tier status. If you are a Tier IV member, your rate also depends on your membership date and whether you participate in the Age 55 Retirement Program.

Interest Rate: For Tier IV members, the 5% interest included in the cost of the service credit purchase represents the annual interest that would have accrued on your pension contributions had you been contributing as a TRS member.

Request Cost Letter (Purchase Prior Service Credit)

Generally, if you are a non-retired Tier III, IV, or VI member, you may use this feature to request a Cost Letter for eligible prior service that has been verified by TRS. Your Cost Letter would indicate any eligible prior service and your options for purchasing credit for this service. If you have other service that can be purchased, such as Amann service, it will be verified at the same time.

Even if otherwise eligible, you may not be able to request a cost letter for one of the following reasons:

  • According to our records, you do not have any verified prior service credit eligible for purchase.
  • You are currently purchasing your eligible prior service credit through a payment plan.
  • You have recently requested a Cost Letter.
  • TRS is revising your current payment plan after receiving additional information.

File Service Claim

To claim eligible service, you would first submit a Record of Prior Service (SB146). Generally, if you are a non-retired Tier III, IV, or VI member, you may download the Record of Prior Service to inform TRS of prior service you wish to claim and to provide documentation. Tier I and II members should call TRS to request a personalized form. After verification, TRS will send a Cost Letter for any eligible prior service. If you are informing TRS of transferred service, you must inform your former retirement system that you wish to transfer your membership to TRS. Once your former retirement system has verified your service details, the transferred service will be credited to your TRS membership.
